Event Details
- A group of vital stakeholders met during the Policy Dialogue on Food Processing Equipment to address critical issues affecting Liberia's food processing facilities, which currently rely on unsuitable mild steel equipment and fail to follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
Key Discussions and Outcomes Challenges Identified:
During the presentation, it was highlighted that:
- the manufacturing process utilizes mild steel instead of food-grade stainless steel for its equipment.
- GMP implementation remains insufficient, which threatens both food safety and quality standards.
Proposed Solutions:
- The use of food-grade equipment needs risk-mitigation strategies along with best-practice guidelines.
- Create educational programs for both processors and fabricators.
- The implementation awareness program focuses on teaching people about quality standards and regulatory compliance.
- Value-chain actors must improve their coordination between themselves.
-
Key Outcomes: The discussion revealed crucial sector deficiencies that require immediate intervention. The participants examined different possibilities for joint solutions through collaboration. The improvement of food processing regulations started with the development of policy recommendations.
Stakeholder Commitments:
- The Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoCI) will help fabricators acquire food-grade equipment for MSMEs operations.
- The Liberia Standards Authority (LiSA) together with UNIDO (GROW-2, LIFSI) will organize training sessions for TVET institutions and all other stakeholders.
- Fabricators are required to complete further training in equipment production methods.
